Pacific Fishermen, Inc. 150 Years of Heritage Norwegian Shipbuilding

By Fred F. Poyner IV and John Douglas Dixon

A tribute to the Norwegian-heritage fishermen and shipwrights of the Pacific Northwest. An eclectic and essential group who have survived the ravages of the 1918 Spanish Flu and the 2021 COVID-19 Coronavirus. As a testament to this the King of Norway, HM King Harald V, specifically requested a visit to the shipyard on his tour of America in 2015. He specifically wanted to congratulate his cadre of Norwegian-American Fishing Pioneers and Knights-in-Waiting at a PacFish BBQ where he of course was served King Crab!

Testimonials

A well written, extensively researched story of Seattle’s oldest shipbuilder. This deeply documented book also paints a descriptive picture of the city’s maritime history and growth of the Ballard area as well as the Seattle’s industrial base. It’s a must-read for anyone interested and passionate about Seattle and Pacific Northwest history, and boats and ships generally. – Don Pugnetti Jr., author of A Coat Dyed Black: A Novel of the Norwegian Resistance t

With the Demise of MARCO Shipyard, Lunde and Harris Electric and their asset purchase, PacFish Shipyard and PFI Marine Electric became home to the F/V NORTHWESTERN that my father, Sverre Hansen, had built at MARCO in 1978. The fleet of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch depends on PacFish to keep these old girls shipshape and seaworthy to survive the ravages of the Bering Sea. As they say, ‘the sea has no back door.’ You can’t run and hide.  Captain Sigurd Jonny “Sig” Hansen, Discovery Channel’s Return of the Viking and Deadliest Catch

Doug Dixon, my classmate at the University of Michigan in the early 70’s, and I worked together at MARCO. He helped me in the final design of the U.S. Navy R/V KILO MOANA (T-AGOR-26), which became the inspiration for Clive Cussler’s R/V DEEPWATER EXPLORER in the adventure novel Valhalla Rising. He and co-author Fred Poyner IV have expertly chronicled the history of 150years of Norwegian shipbuilding in the Pacific Northwest. Guido Perla, Naval Architect, Designer of the Factory Trawlers STARBOUND, ALASKA OCEAN, NORTHERN EAGLE, HAWK, and JAEGER

Author’s Note

The book is a culmination of the past five years with Doug and myself as a collaborative work as the authors.

Both the research involved and the writing has drawn a great deal from primary sources: interviews, oral histories, the archives of PFI, and most importantly, from Doug’s own experiences and insights.

The primary sources include firsthand shareholder and Board officer accounts, as well as archives from institutions such as MOHAI, PSM, the Seattle Municipal Archives, and Seattle Times.
